After many winning seasons as the Saanich Fusion Football Club (SFFC) division one men’s head coach, Steph Steiner, has stepped down.
During his time as head coach, Steiner won a Vancouver Island Soccer League (VISL) Jackson Cup trophy and three consecutive VISL Division One titles, 2011/12-2013/14.
Ian Bush and Matt Carr have taken over. Bush has coached in the club for past four seasons while Carr helped him coach the Under 21 Graduate men’s squad last year.
The pair led the SFFC Under 21 squad to a George Smith Cup trophy and a second place finish in the VISL Under 21 Graduate league last season.
Bush’s resume is impressive; he holds a provincial B certificate and has won the VISL division four league title twice, the VISL division three league title and the VISL McGavin Cup.
“Attracting high level players because I didn’t play at UVic or at a high level and they may not know who I am,” is one of the challenges Bush expects the pair may have this season.
“Managing player expectations,” Carr added, may be another challenge the two face in their inaugural season in the VISL first division.
Their goal is to build a team that shows improvement as the season goes on.
“If we see improvement and cohesion as the season goes on then I will be happy,” said Bush.
The coaches would like to thank the SFFC board for the support they showed Steiner as well as the support they have shown them as they take on this new challenge.
