A team of BU16 players will continue a Saanich Fusion tradition and compete in the Gothia Cup this July. The Gothia Cup, held in Gothenburg, Sweden, is the largest youth tournament in the world, drawing teams from Europe, Africa, and Asia, as well as North and South America. The BU16 squad will be the fourth team in recent years to represent Saanich Fusion at Gothia—a tradition recognized by the Gothia organizers who assigned the team what they called “the usual Saanich colours,” blue and white. Players and parents are working hard to raise funds for the trip and want to thank the Frank Leversedge Memorial Fund, long-time sponsor of World Cups—an event inspired by Gothia—which supports team travel and encourages cultural exchange through soccer. We also want to thank several local sponsors who have donated generously to our team—we’re proud to represent them and Saanich—and invite other sponsors to help a great group of players get to Gothia:
While the team want to perform well at Gothia, their real goal is to interact with players from around the globe, collect memories that will last a lifetime, and encourage other teams at Fusion to learn more about the world, and themselves, through soccer.
